Pure & Impure Sequences in Rummy
The rummy sequence rules decide more games than anything else in 13 card rummy: you cannot declare without a pure sequence, and a misunderstood run is the most common reason a declaration fails. This guide defines pure and impure sequences precisely, works through card-by-card examples, and covers the ace rules and mistakes that catch players out.
In short: a sequence is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. It is pure if no joker stands in for a missing card, and impure if one does. Every winning hand needs at least two sequences — and at least one of them must be pure.
What Counts as a Sequence
A sequence (also called a run) is a group of three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive rank order. Both conditions must hold at once:
- Same suit: 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ is a sequence; 5♥ 6♠ 7♥ is not, however consecutive the ranks are.
- Consecutive ranks: 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ qualifies; 5♥ 7♥ 9♥ does not — there are no gaps in a run.
Three cards is the minimum; longer runs of four, five or more cards are equally valid and can be an efficient way to absorb awkward cards. In a 13-card hand you will typically build two runs of 3–4 cards alongside your sets.
The Pure Sequence Rule in Rummy
A pure sequence is a run built entirely from natural cards — no joker substitutes for a missing card anywhere in it. Examples:
- 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ — a classic three-card pure run.
- 10♠ J♠ Q♠ K♠ — a four-card pure run of high cards.
- A♦ 2♦ 3♦ — pure, using the ace low (see the ace rules below).
One subtlety matters here: a wild joker played at its natural suit-and-rank value still counts as a natural card. Suppose the 7s are this round's wild jokers. The run 6♥ 7♥ 8♥ remains a pure sequence, because the 7♥ is sitting in its own natural place — it is not substituting for anything. The same 7♥ dropped into 4♠ 5♠ [7♥] would be acting as a joker, making that run impure. What breaks purity is substitution, not the mere presence of a card that happens to be wild. A printed joker, by contrast, has no natural rank or suit, so it can never appear in a pure sequence.
Impure Sequences: Jokers as Substitutes
An impure sequence is a run in which one or more jokers — printed or wild — stand in for missing cards. Examples, again assuming 7s are wild this round:
- 9♦ 10♦ [printed joker] — the joker plays as the J♦ (or the 8♦).
- 3♣ [7♠ as wild joker] 5♣ — the wild 7♠ fills in as the 4♣.
- K♥ [printed joker] [7♦ as wild joker] Q♥... — multiple jokers in one run are allowed, though each joker spent here is one you cannot use elsewhere.
Impure sequences are just as valid as pure ones for every purpose except the one mandatory pure run. They count toward your two-sequence minimum, they group cards that would otherwise be deadwood, and under the scoring rules the cards in them cost you nothing if an opponent declares first.
Why One Pure Sequence Is Mandatory
The pure sequence requirement is what keeps Indian Rummy a game of construction rather than joker collection. With two decks and a wild rank in play there can be a dozen or more jokers at the table; if jokers alone could complete a hand, rounds would be decided almost entirely by who drew them. Requiring one run built with no substitutes forces every player to actually assemble consecutive natural cards — the core skill of the game.
Its importance is enforced twice over:
- A declaration without a pure sequence is invalid, no matter how tidy the rest of the hand looks — and an invalid declaration commonly costs the full 80-point penalty.
- If someone else declares while you still lack a pure sequence, all 13 of your cards count against you, including cards sitting in otherwise valid sets and impure runs. With one, only your genuinely ungrouped cards count.

Ace High or Low: A-2-3, Q-K-A — but Never K-A-2
The ace is the only card that can sit at either end of the rank order, and it must choose one end per run:
- A♠ 2♠ 3♠ — valid; the ace plays low, below the 2.
- Q♠ K♠ A♠ — valid; the ace plays high, above the king.
- K♠ A♠ 2♠ — invalid; runs do not wrap "around the corner" from king through ace to 2.
Remember also that whichever end it sits on, an ungrouped ace costs 10 points at scoring time — the same as a face card — so a lone ace you are keeping "just in case" is an expensive hope.
Common Sequence Mistakes
- Mixing suits in a run. 5♥ 6♦ 7♥ looks consecutive at a glance but is not a sequence. Sort your hand by suit to make this visible.
- Wrapping around the ace. K-A-2 is never valid, in any suit.
- Counting a wild-joker substitution as pure. 4♠ 5♠ plus a wild card standing in for the 6♠ is an impure run. Only a wild card at its own natural suit and rank keeps a run pure.
- Confusing sequences with sets. 8♠ 8♥ 8♦ is a set, not a sequence; it cannot serve as your pure sequence. The two-sequence minimum cannot be met with sets, however many you have. See the rules guide for set requirements.
- Using the same card twice. Duplicate cards from the two decks cannot sit next to each other in one run — 6♣ 6♣ 7♣ 8♣ contains a run plus a spare 6♣, not a four-card run.
- Declaring before checking purity. The final check before any declaration should always be: "which of these runs is my pure one?" The declaration guide has a full pre-declaration checklist.
Sequences, Declaration and Scoring Together
The sequence rules only fully make sense alongside the finishing rules. When you declare, the validator (or your opponents, at a home table) checks three things in order: all 13 cards grouped, at least two runs, at least one of them pure. When a round is scored, the pure sequence acts as a gate: with it, only ungrouped cards count against a losing hand; without it, everything counts. In other words, a pure run is simultaneously your licence to win and your insurance against a heavy loss — the reason it is worth forming even in a hand you expect to lose.

Sequence Rules – Frequently Asked Questions
Can a pure sequence have more than three cards?
Yes. Any length of three or more works — 4♦ 5♦ 6♦ 7♦ 8♦ is a perfectly good five-card pure run. Longer pure runs use up cards that would otherwise need their own groups.
Can I have two pure sequences in one hand?
Yes, and it is often strong play: a second pure run frees your jokers to complete sets or a third group instead. Only one pure sequence is required, though.
Does a sequence of jokers count as pure?
Wild-joker cards played at their own consecutive natural values — say 7♣ 8♣ 9♣ when 8s are wild — form a pure run, because nothing is being substituted. Printed jokers can never form or join a pure run.
Is A-2-3 or Q-K-A the better use of an ace?
Whichever your other cards support — both are equally valid. Low aces combine with the cheap 2s and 3s that opponents discard more readily; high runs lock up 10-point cards that would be costly if left ungrouped.
Do I still need two sequences if I have three sets?
Yes. The minimum of two sequences (one pure) is absolute — a hand of four perfect sets is still an invalid declaration. Structure your hand around runs first, sets second.
